Balkh Roundtable Discussion (Aug 28, 2016)
ETWA conducted a roundtable discussion in Balkh Province as part of program to enhance women status at the local level on Sunday, Aug 28. Balkh MPs including a female MP (Breshna Rabi) and representatives from provincial council, MOWA provincial department, Ulema (religious scholars) council, academics and women’s right activists attended the session. Findings of a short survey carried out beforehand by ETWA to identify women issues in Balkh Province were debated among participants, views exchanged and commitments from authorities obtained (domestic violence against women, women’s access to justice, and their access to education and the issue women addiction to drugs in Balkh province). Polygamy and obstruction of justice by influential persons including MPs were also raised as part of problems women face in Balkh province.
The session was an opportunity for participants to exchange contacts and create a networking for future joint programs and initiatives aimed at addressing women issues in Balkh Province.
